Coming from a family with a long tradition of handicrafts, David Laura is an artisan in textiles. He was born in in 1945 in a highland city that, along with being the cradle of superior pottery, also possesses enormous prestige for its exuberant textile art represented in tapestries and rugs of singular design and color. With his family, David has a workshop dedicated to textiles, making his own name and reputation in this branch of Peruvian art.
Fields of flowers stretch toward the horizon where green meadows rest in the shadow of the Andes. All is light and brightness in this colorful tapestry by Luis Leon. Using yarn on a hand-loom, he portrays the flower harvest in Tarma. A boy guides his llamas toward the market in town, each animal laden with fragrant blossoms. Situated at nearly 10,000 feet above sea level in the central Andes of Peru, the Tarma region is considered the Cradle of flowers. Titled Cosechando flores in Spanish.
